Where are you going this summer?

Have you ever left for a vacation without deciding on the location? Or started a trip but never knew where you were going? By definition a journey is a trip somewhere or expedition from one place to another. No one can start a journey without a destination. A shepherd leads sheep to pasture. Each day the shepherd leads sheep from the fold out to lush pasture, and then in the evening they return home to the safety of the fold. A shepherd has a destination in mind for the journey.

Getting people to the destination is what leadership is about. Do you know where you’re heading? As leaders our destination is the focal point! So, where are you heading? The apostle Paul declares … Follow God’s example in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice…(Ephesians 5:1-2) As Godly leaders our job is to help people become like Jesus Christ – that is the destination. Having a life filled with love; living as a servant, ready to meet the needs of others!

Be a leader by helping someone become more like Jesus Christ today!

Would you like some wisdom with that?

Wisdom defined by Webster’s dictionary is accumulated learning, the ability to discern, and good sense. Wisdom is an attribute that many people aspire to but few possess it. In fact I often wonder in our world today if we even know what wisdom looks like and would we recognize it, if we stepped on it. But great leaders possess wisdom!

A person with the attribute of wisdom predominately listens, learns and evaluates. Generally speaking wise people are good decision makers, reaping the benefits over the long-term. They rightly apply knowledge to a given situation. Colossians 1:28 says … “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” Great leaders cloak everything that they say and do with wisdom. The things they say just make plain old good sense. They have a way of making the most complicated things sound simple, easy to understand. That is what great leaders do!

Lead today with wisdom, learning, discerning and rightly applying knowledge along the way!

How do you let someone know that you love them?

We live in a world where communicating love can be confusing. We use the word ‘love’ to describe everything from pizza to children to our new apps on iphones. Today, love is often separated from negative feelings and many people believe love is about making you feel good.  A dictionary definition of ‘love’ is a feeling of tender affection.

The apostle Paul writes a letter to a group of people who need to be corrected. He writes … “For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.” (2 Corinthians 2:4) Great leaders have a tender heart of compassion for people. In fact what moves them into action is not anger/frustration or noble causes but love, a tender affection for people. By helping people move toward God’s agenda in a spirit of tender affection, we display great leadership.

Do you have a tender affection for people that would bring anguish and tears to your eyes if they deviated from God’s agenda? That kind of heart is one of a great leader. Next time you think about those who follow your leadership, ask yourself the question “What feelings do I have when people stray from God’s agenda?”

Great leaders display a tender heart of affection for people!

How are you becoming more obedient to the faith?

Obedience is one of those words that our culture today does not like very much.  When people hear the word ‘obey’ they most often think of a dog with its owner.  A situation were people must ‘obey the rules’ is said to have no freedom of expression.  Circumstances that involve following procedures or protocol will more than likely be questioned by saying; “Who made those rules to be the right rules?”

Whether we like it or not our world functions with a set of rules that require following if people want to survive through life.  Governments make laws, business creates policies and our education system grades papers.  God has a standard that he laid out in his Word too.  That standard is obedience to his commands.  The job of great leadership is to help people achieve that standard and then maintain it.  Great leaders’ help people achieve the standard by communicating the standard in many ways, giving them the training and tools necessary to meet the standard and encourage them to succeed.  The apostle Paul tells the Roman church that this was his role; “…we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.” (Rom. 1:5)

If you want to be a great leader then help people succeed by communicating the standard they are being measured with, give them the equipment to complete the task and encourage them through the process of achieving the standard.

Helping people become obedient to God’s standard will identify you as a great leader!
